Welcome to Atlantis: My Princess Kida Inspired Costume

Sewing my own costume with a few tweaks inspired by Princess Kida from Atlantis: The Lost Empire,

I really wanted to be Kida for Halloween a few years ago and I could never seem to get my sh*t together in time to order the pieces necessary for the costume.

When I started making my outfits for Seven Stars this year, I knew this one would make it into the lineup and make another appearance for Halloween.

The Patterns:

Top: Olivia Sporty Top Twisted Knot Racerback

Bottom: Donna Twisted Knot Skirt

The Fabric:

Mystique Foiled Spandex Fabric | Blue Moon Fabrics – Cafe Latte/Gold (1 yard: Used for the small gold accents in the skirt)

Matte Nylon Spandex Fabric Classic Collection | Blue Moon Fabrics – Blue Star (2 yard: Used for the top, ordered extra to be on the safe side!)

Power Mesh Fabric Classic Collection | Blue Moon Fabrics – Blue Star (1 yard: Used for the waistband of the skirt and the small blue fabric strip at the front)

Matte Nylon Spandex Fabric Classic Collection | Blue Moon Fabrics – Bouquet (2 yard: Used for the body of the skirt, ordered extra to be on the safe side!)

Matte Nylon Spandex Fabric Classic Collection | Blue Moon Fabrics – Scarlet (1 yard: Used for the red stripe in the skirt)

The Top:

Kida wears a strapless top in the movie, but my girls would not be happy dancing in a strapless top all weekend so I opted for this twist top racerback. I made an XL but would size down to a L if I made this with the same fabric again.

The instructions were a little unclear in a few points, but after some trial and error, I was happy with how the top turned out with pretty much no modifications.

The Bottom:

The bottom required a bit of tweaking to get it to look how I wanted.

I had to start with colorblocking the body of the skirt, but I’d already had some practice with colorblocking from my Shego outfit.

This one was easy enough; I cut two approximately 1.5″ strips from the gold fabric and about a 3″ strip from the red. I used my serger to serge the pieces together and then cut the body of the skirt from the new colorblocked fabric.

I used the blue mesh fabric for the waistband pieces and then eyeballed a rectangular strip to attach to the front of the skirt.

I finished the hems of the skirt with a rolled hem; this was my first time using my serger to do this and I think it turned out pretty well!

The Final Touches:

I had to add the glow-in-the-dark crystal necklace (of course) for Halloween and then added a light blue pashmina and white fishnets when I wore it to Seven Stars.

It’s a pretty niche costume, but the people that got it, loved it!

This came together pretty quickly, but I thought it was still a fun project that required me to get a bit creative to achieve the look I wanted. This will definitely be stashed in the costume drawer to come back in the future!
